How to Keep Your Basement Dry this Winter

The last thing you want is water seeping into your basement, so follow these tips on how to keep your basement dry this winter!

The cold weather is quickly approaching and that means ice and snow are possible in the near future. Snow and ice accumulation can lead to excess water build up around your home and the last thing you want is that water to seep into your basement. Here are some great tips for keeping your basement dry this winter.

Fill Cracks

If there are cracks in your basement walls or floors, it could be the reason that water is getting into your basement. Before the winter hits full force, it’s a good idea to fill any cracks that you come across in your basement. Caulk or hydraulic cement can be used to fill the openings.

Gutters & Downspouts

You want to regularly clean out your gutters and downspouts, especially in the fall when all of the leaves are falling off of the trees. It’s a good idea to do this one time right before the winter season to ensure that they are cleaned out and ready to go. Blocked gutters and downspouts can cause water to spill over the sides and leak straight onto your home’s foundation.

Pile Up Dirt

The soil that is around your home’s foundation helps to absorb rainwater and keep it from getting into your home. Over time, this soil will sink and settle. This means that you have to pile up the dirt around your home before the winter season to ensure that there’s enough to protect your foundation. Be careful not to pile the dirt too high, however, because it could bring rotting and termites to your home. A good rule of thumb is to keep the soil around your home at least 6 inches higher than the rest of your yard.

Indoor Humidity

Though the air can be cold and dry, you don’t want to shut off your dehumidifier during the winter season. It is recommended to keep it set the same as you would in the summer to help decrease moisture from other indoor sources. This includes things like leaky dryer vents or cold pipes that may cause condensation.
