The Main Causes of Basement Flooding

Basement flooding is not only inconvenient and a hassle to clean up, but it can do some serious damage to your home!

Basement flooding can be frustrating for homeowners to deal with and often results in damage to your flooring and other property. If you know some of the possible culprits for flooding, then you’ll know what to be mindful of to keep your basement nice and dry. Here are the main causes of basement flooding.

The Foundation Insulation

Poor or improperly installed insulation in your foundation can cause basement flooding. When it rains excessively or if you don’t have adequate or proper drainage in your yard, this can cause water to pool up in your basement. In addition, sewer backups can also cause basement flooding if you don’t have enough insulation. In fact, this is one of the most common causes of basement flooding. If you can, be sure to fix any cracks that you see in your foundation. If not, have professionals come in and assess your basement to make sure that your insulation is doing its job and that you won’t have to endure any further flooding.

The Leaky Windows

Leaky windows allow in more than just air, especially basement windows. The flooding comes in through your windows from clogged gutters and flooded yards and will seep in through windows that don’t have tight seals. To prevent this from happening, caulk around your basement windows and install wells with covers. It may also be necessary to have your window grade adjusted. Be sure to check your gutter spouts to make sure that they are clear and functioning properly. Depending on the age of your home and windows, it might also be time to replace them.

The Leaky Plumbing

If the water isn’t coming from an insulation problem or leaky windows, then it’s probably coming from leaky plumbing. A burst or leaking pipe, a broken washing machine hose, or even a broken water tank or heater will cause flooding in your basement. You’ll need to have these issues repaired immediately to stop the flooding. Consider setting back spigot valves, replacing O-rings, spouts, and other systems related to your plumbing.
