Warning Signs of Foundation Issues

Here are some things to look out for in your home foundation.

No homeowner wants to deal with problems in their home foundation, because these issues almost always lead to expensive repairs throughout the rest of the house. But there is a way to spot potential foundation issues before they get out of control, and you can spare yourself the money and the stress. Here are some things to look out for in your home foundation.

Around the House

It’s likely that you have noticed some small cracks in the walls that might have concerned you. However, all houses settle naturally over time, which means that it’s alright if there are a couple minor signs of adjustment. But if your foundation has serious problems then there are some other warning signs that go beyond simple settling. The wall cracks will be more significant and appear at seams in your house, such as around the windows or doors and between the wall and ceiling. You might also notice cracks in tile and the concrete subflooring. Another bad sign is if your doors and windows won’t close properly and it feels like they are sticking or crooked.

Exterior Signs

Problems with your foundation might not always show up inside of your house. That’s why it’s a good idea to take a walk around your property and closely inspect the outside of your home. If all is well with your foundation, then the exterior walls should look straight from all directions without any signs of curving or bulges. If you notice any of these, or significant cracks or discoloration then this could be the signs of water damage or irregular shifting. It’s especially important to take a good look at the concrete. Keep an eye out for any chipping, and you can even poke at it with a screwdriver to see if any pieces of concrete flake away.

When in doubt, it’s best to have a professional inspect your foundation as well.
