Reducing Humidity in Your Home

Here are some ways to reduce moisture and humidity in your home.

It’s the time of year where Maryland weather gets almost unbearably humid, and this can be bad news for your house. If you are concerned about water damage affecting your home, then there are steps you can take to help combat the humidity. Here are some ways to reduce moisture and humidity in your home.

Provide Ventilation

The first step to reducing humidity indoors is to make sure that you have good ventilation. The better the air circulation is in your house, the easier it will be for excess moisture to evaporate. If you have enough ceiling fans, then you can run them for a period of time during the day to help clear up humidity. Also, don’t forget to turn the fans on in your bathroom when you run the shower for that added ventilation. Try not to shut the doors to your basement unless you need to keep them closed, because it cuts off the air circulation and can trap humidity.

Identify Trouble Spots

There are a lot of things in your house that could contribute to the humidity. Aside from the obvious, like steam from showers or boiling water in the kitchen, wet objects, in general, can add humidity. Wet towels, clothes, and even umbrellas shouldn’t sit for long periods inside because the water will eventually release into the air. Instead, make sure that you dry things off as soon as possible. Even houseplants add some moisture to the air.  Also, check for leaks because, in addition to water damage, they can add humidity as well.

Use a Dehumidifier

When all else fails, invest in a quality dehumidifier. A dehumidifier gives you quick results without you having to worry about it. You can find an electric dehumidifier with adjustable settings or save money on one that absorbs water from the air into disposable pads. Remember, a dehumidifier can work much better when you have taken the above steps to stop humidity.
