What You Need to Know About Downspout Extensions
There are a variety of different options when it comes to waterproofing your home. One of the most overlooked options are downspout extensions, which are a great way to keep water from building up inside of your home. Here is what you need to know about downspout extensions.
What are Downspout Extensions?
Downspout extensions resemble wide pipes that are attached to the home. They are designed to push rainwater away from your home so that the water doesn’t breach your home’s foundation. They are so effective that even during big rainstorms, your home will be protected. Foundation repairs can be really expensive, so it’s a good idea to invest in waterproofing tools rather than waiting until the damage is already done.
Above Ground Downspout
There are two different types of downspout extensions and the first one is above ground. This type has a very short installation process and is pretty cost-effective, but it is very visible. This is a good option for someone who doesn’t mind being able to see the downspout that is attached to the gutter. They essentially cut the downspout line that’s already there and connect a new pipe to it. This simple procedure can save you a lot of money on repairs in the long run.
This type of downspout extension involves a little more work because of the fact that it is hidden from view. With this type, sod is cut out and pushed to the side so that contractors can effectively bury the downspout. They will then create a sloped trench that keeps the water running away from your home rather than towards it. Stone is placed at the base of the trench and a PVC line is connected to the downspout, which helps to water drain where it’s supposed to. Once all of this is done, the sod is replaced and the area is re-leveled to look just as good as new. Because of the more complex installation, this is the more expensive option, but also provides the advantage of being hidden.
